Just as an accent can reveal a person’s origin, so a perfume (attar) can identify an Indian rural village. Each village has its unique mixture of oils from native plants, such as jasmine, patchouli, rose, and sandalwood. Connecting scent to beauty is a signature of Indian culture. How did the combs function? Did they just hold oil, or did they have little ‘leakage’ holes so that the oil would drip into the hair? (Or am I getting too complicated?)
No, you’re not. I was wondering the same thing myself. :-) You uncapped the lid, poured oil in your hand, massaged it into the hair, and then combed it out. From this process, the comb was oiled as well, but no holes, or the comb would have needed a special lid for them, like a spice box.
